Domaine des Terres de Velle (Burgundy)
Young Sophie and Fabrice Laronze worked for Maison Alex Gambal from its beginning up until the 2008 vintage, after which they purchased the small, 5-hectare estate of Domaine des Terres de Velle, located in Auxey Duresses. Since then, they invested heavily in a new winery that allows them to move the wines by gravity prior to bottling and to have enough space to bottle wine when it is ready and not be pressured by the incoming harvest.
All of the Terres de Velle holdings are in the Cote de Beaune and included Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Le Referts, Meursault 1er Cru Les Charmes, and Volnay 1er Cru Le Ronceret. Their Bourgogne Blanc and Bourgogne Rouge bottlings are incredible values and are much higher quality than most. Sadly, due to hail in 5 out of the last 6 vintages, their production has been tiny.
I love this up-and-coming estate, and I love their commitment to terroir and non-interventionist approach. They age their wines purely in oak, but the touch is light. Also, they avoid excessive punching down of the cap on the reds and battonage on the whites in order to let the terroir of each cuvee speak for itself.
