Domaine Saint-Marc (Burgundy)
Arnaud Mitanchey, the son of the famed Burgundian oenologist, Jean-Claude Mitanchey, is now making wine at this small, 7-hectare estate located in the village of Paris L’Hôpital (with the help of Dad, of course). Arnaud is (like many of our producers) young, energetic, and forward-thinking. He prefers to preserve the personality of each vineyard site, so, on average, he only applies about 20% new oak to the wines and sometimes less. In addition, he doesn’t attempt to over-extract or superficially make the wines bigger than they naturally are.
The word that comes to mind when I taste the wines of Saint-Marc is ‘finesse.’ These are very classic, elegant Côte de Beaune bottlings that shouldn’t be missed. I was very fortunate to have been introduced to the Mitanchey family by a mutual friend in Burgundy, and I’m proud to represent this up-and-coming estate. Since our first meeting in early 2011, I’ve been witness to better and better winemaking from vintage to vintage as Arnaud move the estate farther towards organic farming and applies various different approaches in the winery.
