Domaine Rene Cacheux (Burgundy)
Domaine Cacheux is a small estate located in Vosne-Romanee, and it's owned and operated by Gerald Cacheux. The estate has been in his family since the early 1900's, but Gerald took over in 2004 after having worked at a number of other estates in Burgundy.
Gerald works the vineyards by hand, plows often, and controls unwanted pests by using sexual/mating confusion instead of insecticides. Harvest is also done my hand, and a meticulous sorting is done both in the vineyard and the winery. The grapes are usually de-stemmed 100%, and the winemaking process begins with a cold maceration and temperature-controlled, slow fermentation. Gerald ages the wines for up to 18 months (depending on the wine,) and he uses from 10%-50% new oak barrels for aging, again, depending on the wine.
Vosne-Romanee is certainly a special appellation within the Cote de Nuits, Gerald produces Vosne-Romanee Villages and well as the Premier Cru wines of Les Suchots and Les Beaux Monts. This is an estate to watch, for sure!
