Domaine Durieu (Southern Rhone)
Vincent Durieu is the vigneron of his family’s domaine, which was created in the 1970s by Paul Durieu. The Côtes-du-Rhône and Côtes-du-Rhône Villages parcels were that of the Durieu side of the family, and the Châteauneuf-du-Pape parcels were that of the Avril side of the family.
The domaine now owns more than 100 total hectares of vines in the appellations of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Ventoux, Côtes-du-Rhône Villages, and Côtes-du-Rhône. They have 37 hectares of Châteauneuf-du-Pape alone!
From these vineyards Vincent produces wines that are both authentic and refined. From his Ventoux bottling to his small-production ‘Lucile Avril’ cuvée, the wines are balanced, elegant, and deep.
As is the case with most great domaines, the secret of Durieu is in their vineyard sites and parcels. The majority of their Châteauneuf parcels lie on the famed plateau of Farguerol, and some of their vines were planted close to 100 years ago.
In the cellar, Vincent take a minimalist approach, only aging a small portion of the Lucile Avril cuvée in barrel. All of the other vinification and aging is done in tank.
These wins are some best values to be found in Châteauneuf-du-Pape!
